Klesch Petroleum operates three refineries – Heide Refinery and Ruhr Oel Refinery, located in Germany, and Kalundborg Refinery, located in Denmark – all three of which are noted in their respective countries for being reliable business operators and partners in their local communities.
Our refinery teams are business leaders in their own right, with accountability and responsibility for excellence in operational production and rigorous performance.
Under Klesch, our refineries have more transparency into the commercial factors driving their productivity and profitability. We are using AI to analyse 40 years of historical data and significantly improve our maintenance programmes. We make prudent investment decisions and constantly look to improve – all while maintaining operational availability, whilst accounting for the evolving energy transition landscape.

Heide Refinery
Germany’s northernmost crude oil refinery
Klesch acquired Heide Refinery from Shell in 2010. Klesch has had stable production for over a decade, increasing overall revenue by 31%. Heide Refinery is now one of the top refineries in the world relative to operational availability, the industry standard measuring the percentage of time within a year that a refinery is available for processing – subtracting downtime for turnaround and maintenance.
Since acquiring Heide Refinery, Klesch has:
- Invested €490m to improve environmental and operational performance within the refinery.
- Tripled the types of crude it now processes.
- Boosted the number of new products it produces, while optimising the acquired portfolio of products.
Heide is now one of the largest employers in the region.
Kalundborg Refinery
Denmark’s largest oil refinery
Acquired from Equinor in 2022, Kalundborg Refinery is a cornerstone of energy security for the supply and mobility of critical fuels to Danish, Scandinavian, and European markets. Kalundborg refinery serves as both a fuel supplier and transporter via ships and fuel truck facilities, facilitating hundreds of shipping movements yearly and supplying petrol and diesel to one of the largest regions in Denmark.
Since acquiring Kalundborg Refinery, Klesch has:
- Invested €97m to improve environmental and operational performance within the refinery.
- Reworked the refinery’s turnaround approach to mitigate operational downtime.
- Welcomed over 140 new employees to the refinery, helping to strengthen the maintenance and engineering excellence of its operations.
Ruhr Oel Refinery
Part of the second largest refinery system in Germany
Acquired from bp in 2026, as an integral part of the large refinery and petrochemical complex in the northern Ruhr area, the refinery benefits from its ability to react quickly to fluctuating market conditions. As one of the largest employers in the region, employing numerous craftsmen and service providers, the refinery plays an important part in supporting the economy of the entire Ruhr area.
